If you are serious about your website, you will need a good domain name!
A good domain name is one that conveys important information about your business, but is short enough that people can remember it.
Do not choose very short abbreviated domain names, unless your business or product is commonly known by that abbreviation. Try to include one or more keywords in your domain name, and avoid choosing hyphenated domain names.
Australian businesses should generally choose a .com.au domain name as their first choice. You MUST have an ABN to register a .com.au domain name. The .com stands for commercial and the .au shows you are an Australian business.
BEWARE when buying a domain name!!!
If going through a reseller, make sure they create an account IN YOUR NAME with YOUR contact details ONLY and not theirs!!!
If they won't do that, go elsewhere!!!
"Registrars and resellers are not permitted to use their own contact details as registrant contact information, unless they have received express written consent from the registrant in that regard."
See the auDA website for more information on the 'Registrant Contact Information Policy'.
ICANN is the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (domain names) on the Internet and defines policies for how the 'names and numbers' of the Internet should run.
ICANN has recently changed some of their requirements and policies affecting registrars (accredited sellers of domain names - our 'boss'), resellers (that would be us) and registrants (that would be our clients).
Please read about the 'Rights and Responsibilities of Registrants' to ensure you understand what is required.
ICANN requires all domain name registrants to ensure that the information in their account is current and correct. This is required once a year or when any of your current information changes.
